How to Speed Ramp in Premiere Pro | Suflo

Learn speed ramps in Premiere Pro: Time Remapping, curve choices and frame interpolation, plus Suflo 3.2 ramps that keep your clip duration unchanged.

Adobe Premiere · Win/MacSpeed Ramp · ProUpdated: 2026-10-12

A speed ramp changes the speed within one clip: accelerate through movement, then slow down the key moment. Use it to direct attention, not to put an effect on every shot.

The native Premiere method: Time Remapping

  1. Prepare the clip: Duplicate the sequence and select the clip. Slowing it down can lengthen it, so check the available space.
  2. Show the speed line: Right-click the clip: Show Clip Keyframes › Time Remapping › Speed.
  3. Set transition points: Ctrl-click on Windows or Command-click on Mac to add speed keyframes.
  4. Adjust speed and transitions: Move each section's line up or down. Use transition handles to soften changes, then play back and check.

Menu labels follow the English interface. Details: Adobe's Time Remapping guide.

What makes this method fiddly?

You need to balance keyframes, transitions and the clip's new duration manually. That may be fine for a few shots; applying the same feel to many clips means checking each one again.

The one-click route with Suflo 3.2

Speed Ramp · Pro · 3 free tries. Apply one of 11 curves without changing the clip's position or total duration. Captions and music do not shift.

  1. Select a clip or an In/Out range.
  2. Open Speed Ramp in Suflo.
  3. Choose a curve and adjust transition type, intensity and piece count.
  4. Apply. The sequence is copied before the first try; watch and check the result.
  5. Use Remove ramp to restore one clip at 100% speed.

This does not write native Time Remapping curves. Premiere does not expose that access to extensions, so Suflo creates short, constant-speed pieces. Speed pieces stay editable in Premiere: adjust their speeds using Speed/Duration.

Which curve should you choose?

These are editorial suggestions, not promises. Choose based on the movement in your shot and the rhythm of your edit.

Slower footage: Frame Blending or Optical Flow?

Frame Sampling repeats or removes frames. Frame Blending combines neighboring frames. Optical Flow analyzes motion to create intermediate frames. Check complex motion and edges; no method is perfect for every shot.

In Suflo, choose Frame Blending or Optical Flow for slow pieces. Premiere's options: Adobe's time interpolation guide.

Using it alongside captions

The free caption core in 3.2 streams lines live, with time left and Cancel. The local engine includes measured word timings, a 2 lines × 42 layout, Fast / Most accurate decoding, sound-tag filtering and a silent-audio warning. Offline English translation is Pro.

Frequently asked questions

Is Speed Ramp free?

Curve cards and previews are free. Applying a ramp is a Suflo Pro feature, with 3 free tries before buying.

Does Suflo write native Time Remapping curves?

No. Premiere does not expose Time Remapping to extensions, so Suflo creates short, constant-speed pieces. Their speeds remain editable through Speed/Duration in Premiere.

Will my captions or music shift?

Suflo Speed Ramp preserves the clip's position and total duration; captions, music and following clips stay in their timeline positions.

How do I undo a ramp?

Use Remove ramp in Suflo. It restores one clip at 100% speed without leaving a gap, even after closing and reopening the panel.

Does Optical Flow always look good?

No. Check complex motion and compare Optical Flow, Frame Blending and Frame Sampling. The best method depends on the shot.
